EAST BERNARD, Texas (SmallTownPapers) -- East Bernard's merchants will put out their best products and their lowest prices for today's annual Shop the Block event.

Sponsored by the East Bernard Chamber of Commerce, this is the 10th annual event. Participation has grown each year, with nine vendors and eight businesses taking part this year.

"It is to benefit the community and the merchants," said Tammy Alexander, who operates Savon Drugs and Glory Bean Coffee Co.

Shops will open from 6 to 9 p.m. today and feature a host of items and special deals. One unique item up for sale this year is a limited edition Christmas ornament, designed by East Bernard High School junior Chris Blahuta. A contest was held recently among high school art students, with the theme centering on historic town scenes.

Blahuta's design was chosen as the winner.

The ornaments will be for sale for $10 each during Shop the Block. Profits will benefit the chamber's general operating expenses, including funding scholarships for local students.

Santa is also scheduled to make a visit during Shop the Block, stopping at Gasch Photography, 207 Urbanec St. Pictures can be taken with Santa from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Entertainment will include performances by Keller Academy of Performing Arts dancers.

Participating businesses include Savon Drugs, Glory Bean Coffee Co., Gasch Photography, Polak Petals, Vacek's Hardware, Katelyn's Krazes, KAPA and Hlavinka. Vendors will include Lady Bead Jewelry, The Pampered Chef Patrice Vacek, Hair Treats And Sweets Norma Longoria, John Heimann handcrafted leather jewelry and more, Monster bites, Rodan and Fields Dermatologist, Verdigris Sky, Barbara Ardis jewelry and Head to Toe Salon.
